It’s no secret that Joss Whedon is the champion of the strong female protagonist. And in the very first scene of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, we see the typical hoodlum boy escorting his typical mousy date into a breaking and entering situation. She chirps that they shouldn’t be there and that it seems too dangerous. In typical tough-guy fashion, he tells her to relax because they are all alone. Strangely enough that seems to please the girl. It is THAT moment that Darla shows her true vampire self and mauls that poor, unaware boy.
Right there Joss sets the tone for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The girl is the hero and the girl is the bad guy. Not only that, both girls are tough. Remember that girls can kick ass. Anytime. Anywhere.
